Do the Spongebob: The SpongebobAcross the country, hip-hop dance crazes are getting their start not on BET or in nightclubs, but on YouTube. Here, Atlanta’s finest dance crews teach us the latest and greatest homegrown moves.

The SpongebobRiverdance for the snap-music set. Rapper Young G, 18, created this move, a slightly slower version of one that originated in Baltimore: You do a little jig, kicking one leg behind the other in quick succession. “I first saw it on YouTube, and I didn’t know where it came from,” .“Then some cats from Baltimore came on my MySpace and said I stole their stuff.” “Spongebob”—the dance and G’s accompanying song—has become a regional hit, winning him opening spots for Ludacris and Yung Joc. Here, Erica Daniels, Destiny Fontaine and Amari Harper demonstrate the step. Why is it named after the squishy Nickelodeon hero? “Watch the cartoon,” G says. “Check out the way he moves his legs when he swims—that’s what’s up.”
